Laparoscopic hernia repair
What do you understand by hernia?
Hernia is a defect /hole in the abdominal wall through which intestines and other organs try to come out of the abdominal  cavity. The inner lining of the abdomen pushes through the weakened area to form a balloon-like sac. This, in turn, can cause a loop of intestine or abdominal tissue to slip into the sac causing complications like obstruction ,strangulation, irreducibility, etc

What are the types of hernia ?
Depending on the site ,it can be Inguinal, femoral, umbilical, epigastric, hiatal, incisional, etc

Why surgery is needed ?
If the intestinal loop gets stuck inside the hernia ,it can lead to OBSTRUCTION or if blood supply gets cut off it can lead to BOWEL GANGRENE.Any complications of hernia can  increase the trouble for the patient as well as increase the cost of surgery.

Causes for hernia formation ?
Men and women ,boys or girls can have hernias.Reasons are natural weakness in the abdominal wall or excessive strain on the abdominal wall such as strain from heavy lifting, substantial weight gain, persistent coughing, or difficulty with bowel movements or urination, previous surgery, etc

What are the symptoms of hernias?
....A noticeable protrusion in the groin area or in the abdomen ,decreases on lying down or when pushed by fingers
....Feeling pain on heavy wt lifting.
....A dull aching sensation.
....Nausea and constipation

How is a laparoscopic hernia surgery done ?
Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin, telescope-like instrument known as a laparoscope  that is inserted through a small incision at the belly button .There are 2more 5mm cuts through which  small 5 mm hand instruments are inserted to operate. procedure is performed under general anesthesia after evaluation of  history and physical exam, including lab work .

You will not feel pain during this surgery. The laparoscope is connected to a tiny video camera, which projects an "inside view" of the patient's body onto television screens in the operating room The abdomen is inflated with a harmless gas (carbon dioxide) . A mesh patch is attached to secure the weak area under the peritoneum. The peritoneum is then stapled or sutured closed. Following the procedure, the small abdominal incisions are closed with a stitch or two, or with surgical tape. Within a few months, the incision are barely visible.

What are the benefits of laparoscopic hernia surgery?
Three tiny scars rather than one large abdominal incision
Short hospital stay ....same day or next day discharge
Reduced post-operative pain
Low hospital costs
Faster return to work
Shorter recovery time and earlier resumption of daily activities

What precautions to be taken after surgery?
Avoid heavy work or weight lifting for at least 2 months

How safe is laparoscopic hernia repair?
This procedure is as safe as open surgery.
